Jerry Bostick went to Chicago Tuesday and contracted to appear with the Feminist Company the latter part of this month. The Monon passenger train was ditched at Lowell Tuesday morning by a thirty pound mail bag thrown against a switch. The water tank of the Monon railroad was destroyed by fire Thursday morning.

May 5, 1944

Orin Farris, principal of Monon schools for the past five years, resigned this week. Leonard Cooley, a member of the Sea Bees, who has been on Bougainville Island, was flown to a hospital on Guadalcanal April 23rd.

May 6, 1954

The Monon High School band’s twelve senior members took part in their final concert Friday night when the band presented its annual Spring concert in the high school gym. The twelve are Frances Vollmer, Carol McDonald, Molly Clary, Pat Curtis, Gib Phebus, Larry Somers, Max Green, Dick Marion, Bob Jewett, Mary Jane Hughes, Charles Crone and Jay Wall. Pvt George Burks, son of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Burks, arrived home Saturday evening for a 30 day furlough after serving 16 months in Korea. Camp Pickett, Va. April 29—John J Baker, son of Mr and Mrs Leslie Baker of Route 1, Monon, Ind, is one of 4,000 officers and enlisted men who will take part in the Army’s giant logistical maneuver, LOGEX-54, at Camp Pickett, Va. next week. Monon Lumber Co., Inc vs Town of Monon—After hearing the evidence the court orders that said public street in the town of Monon be vacated and closed, and said portion of the Railroad street be annexed and become the property of the petitioner, Monon Lumber Co, Inc, the sole owner of land adjoining the vacated street. Costs are taxed at $26.23.

May 7, 1964

Two masked, armed men held up the Monon Liquor Store Thursday night, knocked out employee Bill L Boyd, and made off with the contents of the cash register. Principal Holcslaw announced that Anita Hutton was Valedictorian of the graduating class. He then introduced Carol Pratt and Violet Allen and announced that one of the two would be the class Salutatorian. USS Frank Knox—William G Overton, chief hospital corpsman, USN, son of Mrs Hazel A Overton of Monon, visited Mombasa, Kenya, April 20-23 while serving aboard the destroyer USS Frank Knox, operating in the Western Pacific with the Seventh Fleet. Bill Cooley admitted the following boys into the WEBELOS: Jim Cook, Kent Harvey, Jerry Brunson, Kevin Lutes, Mike McCormick, Dennis Onken, and Steve Ellenwood. He will conduct his meetings at 7:00 PM every Monday night in the Baptist Church basement.

May 2, 1974

April 23—Marine Pvt Dale A White, son of Mr and Mrs Dale G White of 207 E Fifth St, Monon, Ind, graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA.

May 3, 1984 The Monon Town Board met on Tuesday night to discuss the business of the town. The possibility of putting in a crossing and changing the entrance to the Monon Trailer plant was discussed. The railroad has said they will maintain the crossing once it has been put on, but they will not pay the cost of building the crossing. The town has contacted the county to see if they will build the crossing. Keith Austin, son of Mr and Mrs Gene Austin, Monon, was the prize winning poet for the Allegheny Review of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvxania. His poem, “The Punk to His Analyst” will be published in the 1984 edition of the Review.

The state of Indiana will be the ideal spot to view a ‘once in a lifetime’ solar eclipse, May 10th between 10 am and 2 pm. (EST) Ninety-four percent of the sun’s light and 88% of its surface will be blocked by the moon at the greatest magnitude of the eclipse.

May 7, 2014

The North White Youth Baseball league kicked off its opening day on Saturday with all age levels seeing field time over the course of the day. Kids even enjoyed a trip on the fire truck before the opening ceremonies. Bill Todd of Monon was this year’s First Pitch recipient.
