The Monon News April 8-14, 1914-2014 April 10, 1914 The Monon Cement Tile Works, owned by Rev M. L. Rice, which was destroyed by fire, is now being rebuilt. The public library board of Monon will receive applications for the position of librarian. Ed Hubbell has leased his meat market to James Coffel.

April 7, 1944 The Monon Bank building, office of Grant Long, is being repaired and made ready for the opening of the new bank. Howard Clark has purchased the Roy Culp farm. Albert Snavely has purchased the farm north of the Chapel church.

April 8, 1954 The question of whether or not Monon will have band concerts this summer was brought up for public discussion at the regular Town Board meeting Tuesday night. In attendance were several residents and officials of the community. The Heimlich Hardware store and the McDonald Hardware store will participate in one of the biggest promotions ever staged in the nation, it was announced today.

April 9, 1964 The Monon Trailer Company has installed and is now using a “call” telephone line to Chicago. Although located in Monon, the company is, or will soon be, listed in the Chicago telephone business directory with a Chicago telephone number. The North White high school senior class play has been canceled. The cast had been selected and had been practicing, but several drop-outs left the cast short-handed. Midwestern Hayride TV stars Billy and Helen Scott were visitors in the Kenneth Boze home before and after their appearance on the program of the REMC meeting in the North White gym Friday evening. Billy Scott is a brother of Mrs. Boze. Juanita Cooley announces this week that her Country Side Beauty Salon, featuring hair styling, hair cutting, and hair coloring, is now open.

April 11, 1974 Mrs. Peggy Lee Good Durham, 22, of Route 1, Monticello, died at 5:15 p.m. April 3, at Bryan Manufacturing Co. when the building was leveled by a tornado. Wednesday evening of last week the people of Monticello were just settling down for the evening after a normal day’s activities when suddenly out of the southwest came a terrible roar and the cry of “tornado!”. The time was 5:15 p.m. Before anyone could do anything except take cover, the killer storm had roared through the city leaving Monticello in shambles.

April 12, 1984 1984 is the 150th anniversary of White County, Indiana. In recognition of the county’s sesquicentennial celebration, the Monon Chamber of Commerce has planned an extravagant oneday celebration June 30th.

April 14, 1994 Monon and much of White County were inundated with high water following heavy rains in the area, on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Some areas reported up to 6 inches of rain on Monday afternoon and night.

News and Review April 14, 2004 Monon Firemen held their annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Monon Park on Sunday afternoon, April 11. There was a good turnout for the hunt and top winners were awarded prizes.

April 9, 2014 Six Monon first responders will be recognized for saving two lives last year during a private ceremony on Friday. Charlene Lee, Jennifer Durflinger, Zach Summers, Bill Todd, Colton Linback, and Kyle Tiede will be honored by the Monticello Fire Department during the department’s annual ceremony that includes recognition of members of the emergency community in White County for acts of courage and valor as well as for saving lives. Indiana Beach will add three more new attractions beyond the ones announced last week. The additional attractions for its 88th season are the Viper, Grand Carousel, and the Pumpkin Ferris Wheel.
