Train accident takes 2 lives in Chalmers

CHALMERS — Monday morning, two people were killed when the vehicle they were in was hit by a northbound Amtrak train at the crossing on Main Street. According to Chalmers Fire Chief Mike Hill, the accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. with ambulances responding from Brookston and Monticello along with the Chalmers Fire Department.

Hill said when the fire department arrived, the victims appeared to be deceased. Coroner Tony Deibel said they were pronounced at the scene.

There were no injuries to staff or passengers reported on the train, or damage to the train, which continued on its journey when released from the scene. Hill said the train slows in Brookston, then speeds up as it heads north arriving in Chalmers at about 60 mph. There are no crossing arms at that intersection, but has warning lights. He said there are crossing arms and lights at the tracks intersecting Walnut Street, however.

“I cannot emphasize enough to use extreme caution when crossing railroad tracks,” he said.

The fire department was on the scene of the accident for over two hours. They extricated the victims, which were then turned over to the county coroner’s office.

The two men from South Dakota who were working in the area, were identified as Michael Lee Cross, 24, who was the driver, and Corey Alan Thompson, 22, who was a passenger.

The White County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
