As temperatures rise and families head outdoors, it’s important to remember that summer fun should go hand in hand with safety. Whether you’re planning beach days, backyard barbecues, or road trips, a few simple precautions can help ensure the season remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat-related illnesses increase significantly during the summer months. Symptoms like dizziness, excessive sweating, or rapid heartbeat may signal heat exhaustion or even heatstroke. Make sure you are staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid strenuous activity during peak-heat hours, which typically are between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Pools, lakes, and beaches offer a great way to cool off, but they also pose risks, especially for children. The American Red Cross recommends that all swimmers, regardless of age, never swim alone and always have supervision. If your child is a weak swimmer or has never taken swimming lessons, enroll them as soon as possible. When boating, always wear a life-jacket and have a designated “water-watcher” to keep their eye on the people in the water.
Summer is also prime time for grilling; but it comes with fire hazards. The national Fire Protection Association reports that June and July are peak months for grill fires. When you’re grilling, always make sure you are outdoors in a well-ventilated area that is way from overhangs or dry vegetation. Always make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby and never leave a hot grill unattended.
When outside, don’t forget the sunscreen and bug spray. Mosquitoes, ticks, and harmful UV rays can dampen summer fun. Make sure you are wearing sunscreen with at least 30 SPF and reapply the sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming and/or sweating.
With a little planning and awareness, summer can be both fun and safe. Remember, prevention is the best protection; so, grab your sunglasses, stock up on sunscreen, and enjoy everything the season has to offer!
