Reflections on a winter January morning

It’s a winter Monday morning, and we are preparing for another round of snow. I look outdoors this day and see that the trees are all flocked with snow. They are beautiful if you are in the house looking out, but the wind was biting as the Roadster took his morning constitutional, and I hustled him about more quickly than he would have liked.

The day stretches out before me; we are waiting for the repairman who will fix the security panel this morning. It has been broken for a month while we have waited for parts, and we have decided that we almost wish we had just had it removed. It is a certainty that the security company and the local police departments have not missed our false alarms. I was almost on a first-name basis with the phone staff at FE Moran when we first got the system, as we set the darned thing off all the time.

So that we felt better about not having electronic protection, we bought Roady a t-shirt that reads SECURITY, since he is now the main method that we have to inform us when intruders are on the property . . . also friends, family, the UPS driver, the Schwann’s man, and any passing motorist or runner. When we got the new door with the glass panel, he can now see movement and now that he can see more activity, he is quick to let us know about it; usually long after we have asked him to stop. Sometimes I wish he had a mute button.

Still, as he lies in the office chair beside me, wrapped up in his blanket, I am happy for his company. It is nice to have someone love you so unconditionally. I often don’t deserve his adoration but will take every minute of it that I can. I am so sorry that the family photo we had scheduled for the day after Christmas had to be canceled. Not only was I looking forward to a family photo, but a really good photo with my four-legged bestie was my fervent wish.

The pleasant sounds of classical music are playing on the CD player this morning and the sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach fill the air with quiet majesty. Such a soothing sound to quiet the soul; I can’t make music, but certainly can enjoy it. A tasty cup of flavored coffee sits beside me as I spend this morning with you. There is an unaccustomed feeling of peace this morning, a rare feeling for me of late. Someone must be praying for me today; sometimes I can feel that, as I did so often when my father was so ill. So many wonderful prayer warriors had me surrounded with prayer during those days, and it was my guiding light.

We contemplate a trip to the Home Show in Indy. We always enjoy going, but sometimes it is a little frustrating now. Upgrades to housing have become so very expensive. We had a quote to get a shower replacement last year and it was going to cost half as much as we paid for the original part of the house! They may advertise they can do the job in a day, but you will pay for it for the next five years. I can buy a good used car for less than I can this shower! The main reason we had contemplated the upgrade is that I have fallen twice getting in or out of the shower; one day I took the shower curtain and rod with me – not aging gracefully!

Well, my four-legged security guard has announced the arrival of the repairman, so off to the races, as they say!
