Bunko tournament planned

Helping Paws of Monticello is having a fundraising Bunko tournament at American Legion Post #81 in Monticello on April 16, at 2 p.m. Prizes will be offered to the winners, and the Legion will provide snacks and drinks.

Helping Paws of Monticello is a nonprofit organization that exists to manage the over population of feral cats. Call them at 719-321-5186 for more information.

Caregiver support group to meet

Just Breathe, a caregiver support group, will meet On April 18, at 9:30 a.m., at the home of Teresa Alexander, 12783 E450N in Idaville.

The monthly topic will be how to pick a home care agency and home care versus nursing home care.

Brookston Public Library News

The Brookston Public Library is ready for Spring with activities for all ages.

Each Friday in the month of April children ages 3-5 are invited to Story Hour at 10:30 a.m. The theme for the month is eggs, kites, and raindrops.

Toddler Time takes place on April 28, at 9:30 a.m. This program is for children aged a year and a half through two years of age. Participants will enjoy songs, fingerplays, and books.

The third Tuesday of each month is a Lego activity. This program is for grades K-5 and begins at 3:30 p.m. The theme is the participants’ favorite Spring activity.

After-school activities are offered on the third Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. This month participants will be making a baking soda rocket.

Take and Make it Crafts are available for pick up at the library to do at home. They are changed each month to new ones

The Summer Reading Program begins May 25-July 13. This year’s theme is “Bee Kind.” The program is for children aged 1 through adults. Be sure to check the library’s newsletter and website for more information.

The library will be closed on Saturday, April 8, for Easter.

Monon Civic Group to meet

The Monon Civic Preservation Society will meet on Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m. in the Civic Center. Plans for the April 16 annual meeting will be finalized.

All persons interested in preserving Monon’s history and heritage are welcome.

Noodle dinners back at Legion

The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 81, of Monticello is hosting its first homemade noodle dinner of the year on Tuesday, April 18, from 5-7 p.m., at the American Legion Post located on East Washington Street, off of U.S. 24 at the east end of the Washington Street bridge.

The dinner is open to the public. The cost for meals is $10, for adults, and $5, for children aged 5-12.

The meal consists of a choice of chicken or beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, a side salad, a roll (from Kinser’s Bakery), and dessert. Proceeds from this dinner will be donated to the Literacy Volunteers of White County.

Summer benefit planned for children

The 10th Annual Autistic and Children with Special Needs Foundation Ride is set for June 10 at noon at the Whiskey & Wine Saloon in Monticello.

Registration for the event is set for 11 a.m. with kick stands up at noon. Cost is $20 per bike and $5 per rider.

Benefit ride planned for veterans

Riding for Horses and Heroes, a benefit ride for veterans and Courage Rock will be held on July 22 at American Legion Post #81 in East Monticello.

Sign-up begins at 10 a.m. and kickstands are up at noon. The ride starts and ends at the Legion. The ride costs $20 for each bike and $5 for each passenger. Cars and trucks are welcome at $20 each.

The sponsor for the event is the Marine Corps League Michael Walters Detachment 1411.

Local agency looking for vendors, volunteers for event

The White County Department of Child Services is organizing a fair at the Altherr Nature Park to raise awareness of Child Abuse Prevention for April 15. Times for the event will be determined later.

DCS would like to highlight providers, agencies and resources that work with youth and families. They would also include schools and other youth organizations to have booths and participate in a performance, such as a band, choir, etc., as well as food and activity vendors.
