MONON CIVIC

Preservation Society

The stage of the Monon Civic Theatre has been constructed and the walls of the auditorium have been framed in, members of the Monon Civic Preservation Society learned at their recent meeting.

Whitaker Construction will be doing repairs on the roof as soon as the weather permits. At a cost of $20,000, the repairs should eliminate leaks and are guaranteed for 20 years. When the roof is repaired, the auditorium walls will be insulated, the drywall installed, and the ceiling finished. The masonry on the east wall behind the stage is scheduled to be completed soon. A large plaque will be purchased for the lobby and the name plates of the seat donors will begin to be engraved. MCPS will again manage and staff the Little League concession stands as a fundraiser.

BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) concerts are being scheduled. The first concert will be in May featuring the North White High School Garage Band under the direction of Leander Hoover.

Deb Vandervort announced that MCPS member Helen Englert had died. Englert had donated the chandeliers and sconces in the Civic Center in memory of her mother Muriel Englert who had been active in several Monon organizations. A local memorial service for Helen will be held on May 9.

During the meeting, Austin Stroud announced that the library will be sponsoring a Silly Safari during the June 3 Food Fest.

President Emeritus Alene McKinley presented the Society with a framed photograph from September 11, 1941, of the large group of friends and neighbors of Alfred Rinker who assisted in the harvest of Rinker’s corn following the death of his wife. Detailed documentation of the event, along with the names of the participants is included with the photograph. Board member Bob Allen also donated several original historic photographs. Mark Meyers volunteered to restore some of the old images.
