KATE THOMPSON
Kethrine “Kate” Thompson, an active wellloved community member and owner of Kate’s Hair Expressions in Monticello, passed away on Nov. 14, at her residence. She was 56 years old. In her obituary, her parting words are quoted.
“Well, I guess if you’re reading this, my time here is really done. Man, oh man, I sure did give cancer a run for its money! I knew my time was limited, but I was also able to keep on believing that I would beat the odds, which was so helpful in so many ways. There were so many things I still wanted to do, but I think that would have been the case, regardless of when my time came to an end.”
She married Chris Thompson in March 2016 in Las Vegas. “Our life together has been the absolute best,” she wrote.
She was known for her “love of people, animals, nature, music and the color pink. It could never be too pink or too sparkly.”
Kate asked that in place of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Courage Rock Stable where veterans, first responders and those with disabilities of all ages can go for equine therapy, learning to ride, groom and care for horses and ponies.
In her obituary, she wrote, “Don’t be sad for me, think of me with happiness, and when you see things that are pink and sparkly, let them remind you of me. I’ve been showered in so much love, that I’m certain that leaving this world felt like being in a warm cozy blanket, heading off into a universe of glitter and happiness.”
Kate volunteered at the Therapeion Riding Program, where she volunteered for over eight years. Even after her cancer diagnosis, she continued to work with the program.
On the Courage Rock Facebook page, a Nov. 14 post read, “It’s with a heavy heart to know we lost one of our volunteers to cancer today. She truly made an impact and will be dearly missed.”
Comments on the post included, “Such a sweet soul with a dash of spice,” “We were all so fortunate to have had this beautiful soul in our lives in every small or large way,” “She was an amazing and beautiful human. Rest in peace my friend,” “Kate made a huge impact with many!”
Her friend, Dr. Madison Brand said, “Kate was the kind of person whose light reached everyone around her. She had a giving heart, boundless positivity, and spirit strong enough to shine even through the darkest moments. Though she came to Monticello from Canada, she embraced this community— and was embraced in return—as if it had always been her home. Her love, kindness, and influence will stay with us always.”
Many commented on her kind heart and what an amazing person she was who will be missed by many.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, Nov. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home in Monticello. She suggested coming to her funeral in pink and sparkles.
