Board of Works takes $5 million bid under advisement

The Monticello Board of Public Works and Safety took a bid of $5,731,890 under advisement at a special meeting held Monday for Phase 2 of the RCA neighborhood water improvements.

LGS Plumbing of Crown Point was the only bidder for the project.

“Thank you for the bid and we will take it under advisement,” Mayor Cathy Gross told an official from the company.

The base bid by LGS Plumbing was $3,872,825. The bid was broken down as follows: $611,140 for addition 1; $74,240 for addition 2; $571,000 for addition 3; and $608,385 for addition 4. There was one deletion for $5,700.

“We did receive a grant, but we don’t know how far that will go,” Gross said after the meeting. The grant was for at least $2 million.

The estimate for the work was less than what was bid.

Commonwealth Engineering has been performing the engineering work on Phase 2.

The old RCA neighborhood is in the north part of Monticello and involves homes namely on the following streets: Dewey, Turpie, Walnut, Chestnut, First, and Second.

RCA came to the city in 1941 and began making cabinets for televisions. It closed the plant in 1982. Thousands of people worked at the plant over the years.
